Our teaching methodology is to encourage students to grapple with their own beliefs and values. Our teaching includes a naturalist-humanist approach to all aspects of Jewish civilization combined with a deep respect for diversity of belief and practice among our students and their parents.

Each student and parent is encouraged to deepen and expand their Jewish knowledge in a way that is rich and meaningful. A comprehensive program of Family Education offers both parallel study and joint activities to help families explore together the teachings and practice of Judaism.

The school strives to blend the academic study of Jewish civilization with a comprehensive experiential program. To this end, we have planned Shabbat seders, family services, holiday celebrations and special events that invite participation. We hope to instill in our students a love and pride in their Jewishness.

Ever wonder what kids think about going to Hebrew School? We asked some students at Beth Israel's Hebrew School what they thought about it, and why they thought it was important. Watch our video (or click here), and see for yourself the fun and enriching experience!

Rabbi Linda's Blog: "Torah, Toys and Terrorism"

I don't look like a terrorist. But several years ago, when I threatened to throw my daughter's doll in the trash, I looked like a terrorist to her. Throw away a doll? Maybe a time out from a toy, like her plastic computer or a puzzle or a game. To my daughter a doll is a member of the family. It was an unspeakably mean thing to say. Honestly, I would never do anything that heartless. It's just that some days, this single mother of a brilliant, beautiful, brassy little girl reaches the end of her rope and something absurd comes out of my mouth.

Last month we read from the Torah that the penalty for desecrating Shabbat was death. That was unsettling to those following along. Death for desecrating Shabbat? Someone joked that we would slowly lose our entire congregation if that was the case today. Now anyone who knows anything knows that even back then, it never happened that way. So why in God's name (literally in God's name!!) was death threatened for noncompliance?

Beth Israel is proud to support these organizations
